The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a self-help book presented as a story. It follows a young shepherd named Santiago, who dreams of finding treasure at the Pyramids in Egypt. As he embarks on his journey, he encounters various people who teach him life lessons along the way.
The book is accessible for readers of all ages, from children to adults, and is divided into small, digestible sections. Its style is concise, straightforward, and reminiscent of a biblical story or parable.
Before reading, I noticed its popularity and reputation, so I had high expectations. However, I found it difficult to connect with. Typically, I’m drawn to self-help books that are more analytical or factual, rather than narrative-driven. While I appreciate the idea of learning through storytelling, this one didn’t resonate with me, perhaps because it felt too centered around religious themes.
The book touches on many valuable topics, such as overcoming fear of failure, taking risks, and pursuing one’s dreams. Yet, I found some of these lessons lacked depth or originality compared to other works I’ve read.
Although I enjoyed the story overall, it sometimes felt like reading a children’s book. This simplicity, however, is what makes it approachable for a broad audience. The novel starts off slowly but becomes more impactful as it progresses, so it’s worth sticking with it.
I would recommend The Alchemist to readers who enjoy meaningful stories with moral lessons, or to those feeling stuck and unsure of how to chase their dreams. Personally, I’m uncertain if I would read more by this author, as I found the religious undertones too prominent for my taste. That said, I can see why this book appeals to so many, and I respect the comfort and guidance it provides for others. Even though it didn’t quite resonate with me, I don’t want to discourage others from giving it a try.
