Project Hail Mary follows scientist Ryland Grace on a last-chance mission — a desperate attempt to save Earth from a world-ending threat.
I really enjoyed this novel; it keeps you engaged and entertained from start to finish. I struggled to find many flaws with it. The scientific world-building is incredible, detailed yet easy to understand and it makes you feel like a scientist yourself.
The book opens with Ryland waking up with no memory. As he gradually remembers who he is and how he got there, the reader discovers the truth alongside him. Although this could feel like a slow way to reveal a story, Weir keeps it compelling from page one.
A friend recommended this book to me, saying, “It’s one of my favourite books this year.” I went in with high expectations and a bit of scepticism, but it completely lived up to the praise and has become one of my favourites as well.
Andy Weir explores themes of survival, isolation, connection, and collaboration. The story highlights humanity’s resilience and problem-solving abilities while also delving into loneliness, companionship, and the power of teamwork. I found Weir’s approach to these themes both fascinating and heartfelt.
My favourite character was Rocky. He’s loyal, clever, and full of heart, the kind of character who reminds you that friendship can come from the most unexpected places. His relationship with the main character is one of the highlights of the story for me.
Weir’s writing style combines accessible science realism with conversational humour. It often feels like listening to your own thoughts, but with a sharp wit and charm. The scientific elements never feel out of reach, making the book easy to read and consistently engaging.
I’d recommend Project Hail Mary to any science fiction fan, especially those who enjoy a good mystery or stories about unexpected friendship. I’m also really looking forward to the film adaptation set to release next year, and I can’t wait to read more from Andy Weir.
