The Love Hypothesis is an easy-to-read romance novel that follows Olive, a third-year PhD student whose life becomes unexpectedly complicated when her best friend develops feelings for Olive’s ex-boyfriend. Refusing to date him out of loyalty and respect for “girl code,” her friend hesitates, but Olive is determined to prove she has moved on.
In an impulsive attempt to convince her friend, Olive kisses the first man she sees. Unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—that man happens to be the university’s notoriously intimidating and highly respected professor, Adam Carlsen.
What is even more surprising is that Adam agrees to become Olive’s fake boyfriend, helping her maintain the illusion that she has completely moved on from her previous relationship.
Olive is a genuinely funny, relatable, and believable protagonist. Her awkwardness and overthinking make her easy to connect with, while Adam Carlsen is the classic brooding, intelligent love interest who is impossible not to fall for.
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this novel. I hoped for a light, entertaining read that wouldn’t require too much concentration, and that’s exactly what I got. While the story is fairly predictable, it’s also incredibly enjoyable. I particularly loved the university and PhD setting, which felt authentic and relatable, especially for anyone who has experienced university life.
One of the strongest themes throughout the novel is Olive’s internal struggle between logic and vulnerability. As a scientist, she relies on data, evidence, and hypotheses to understand the world around her. However, as her feelings develop, she discovers that emotions cannot be measured or calculated quite so easily, forcing her to embrace a level of vulnerability she never anticipated.
I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book. It’s fun, light-hearted, and laugh-out-loud funny from the very first page. The short, fast-paced chapters keep the story moving, making it incredibly difficult to put down.
I would recommend The Love Hypothesis to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance that feels grounded and realistic. It’s particularly enjoyable for current or former university students, as well as anyone familiar with academic life, thanks to the many little details and experiences that ring true throughout the story.
