Murder Off the Page is the second instalment in The Book Club Murders series and, after thoroughly enjoying the first book, I couldn’t wait to dive back in and spend more time with this wonderful cast of characters.
Returning to this series felt like catching up with old friends. The characters are undoubtedly the heart of these books, and revisiting them was an absolute joy. Their personalities and relationships continue to make the story engaging and entertaining from start to finish.
Like its predecessor, the story wastes no time pulling you in. The murder arrives dramatically within the opening pages, immediately setting the tone for another intriguing mystery. Although this is a sequel, it works well as a standalone novel. There are references to previous events, but they never leave new readers feeling lost.
While I really enjoyed the mystery, I did find this one a little more predictable than the first. The original novel kept me guessing throughout and delivered some genuinely surprising twists. This story is still well plotted and highly enjoyable, but I found it easier to piece together where it was heading.
One of my favourite aspects of this series is that it’s written by a local author and set in places familiar to me. Being able to recognise locations added an extra layer of enjoyment and made it incredibly easy to picture each scene.
Fans of cosy crime, particularly those who enjoy books like The Thursday Murder Club, will feel right at home here. Maggie Allswell continues to deliver the same warm, engaging writing style and charming atmosphere that made the first book such a pleasure to read.
Although I found this mystery a little more predictable than its predecessor, I still had a great time reading it and I’m already looking forward to seeing where this book club finds itself next, and what murder they’ll end up solving.
