“The Man Who Died Twice” is the highly anticipated second instalment in the Thursday Murder Club series, written by renowned author Richard Osman. Building upon the success of the first book, this thrilling mystery novel once again immerses readers in the captivating world of the Thursday Murder Club, a group of charismatic and witty retirees turned amateur detectives.
This story picks up where the previous book left off, quite literally “it was the following Thursday”. This time, the stakes are higher as Elizabeth, Ron, Joyce and Ibrahim find themselves at the centre of a dangerous conspiracy involving high-profile individuals, bringing Elizabeth’s past to the forefront and we also find out what Elizabeth used to do as a job. The plot unfolds with a perfect balance of suspense, humour, and unexpected twists, keeping readers guessing until the very end.
Personally, the strongest element within this book is the vibrant and lovable cast of characters. Each member of the Thursday Murder Club possesses their own unique quirks and strengths, Elizabeth’s intelligence and sharp wit, Ron’s bumbling charm and humorous remarks, Joyce’s resourcefulness and tenacity and Ibrahim’s wisdom and calmness, which are further explored in this second book. Osman skilfully develops these characters, allowing readers to forge a deeper connection with them and become invested in their lives.
‘The Man Who Died Twice’ is a thoroughly enjoyable read that lives up to the expectations set by its predecessor being delightfully engaging, seamlessly blending humour and suspense throughout the narrative. His ability to craft witty dialogue and clever banter between the characters injects a light-heartedness into the story making this book difficult to put down. I found myself looking deeper into the meanings of the events happening to try and solve the mystery, but with Osman’s twists and turns, it keeps readers on the edge of their seats guessing right until the end.
“The Man Who Died Twice” is a fantastic addition to the Thursday Murder club series. As a reader, I had reserved thoughts, wondering if Osman could match the same level of intrigue and enjoyment that the first book offered. After all, it is a common occurrence for sequels to fall short of their predecessors. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that “The Man Who Died Twice” still managed to capture that same feeling that drew me into the series initially, Osman’s ability to maintain the connection with readers and the charm of the characters is truly commendable.
While the first book may hold a special place in my heart and the hearts of many readers, “The Man Who Died Twice” successfully carries forward the essence and spirit of the series that has left me excited for future additions to the series. This book could be read alone, but I think to have that captivating magic you need to read the first book alongside to fully understand the characters, this book is a must-read.
