I was instantly drawn to this novel. The blurb sounded fun, and the cover is beautifully designed. I am hoping this is what it will look like once published. I went in not entirely sure what to expect from the story, but it matched the synopsis perfectly without giving too much away.
This book gave me a similar feeling to The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. It features an equally humorous and believable group of characters you can easily imagine together. The pacing is smooth and easy to follow, making it a genuine “can’t put it down” kind of read.
Judy is a standout character. She is very funny and someone I would love to spend time with. At the beginning, there are quite a few characters to keep track of, so it took a few chapters to fully settle into who everyone was, but this didn’t take long.
The novel follows a book club that becomes suspicious of a man they believe could be a serial killer, which explains their name, “The Serial Killers Book Club.” However, the story takes an unexpected turn that really gripped me. At first, I thought it might be quite predictable, and while a few moments played out as expected, overall it delivered a strong and engaging mystery.
The setting felt particularly special to me as it is local, and the author is also local. I was immediately hooked by a story so close to home, and I was not disappointed. The essence of Matlock is captured really well, with accurate geography and subtle mentions of nearby areas. It felt very real, as though the events could genuinely happen.
As expected for a murder mystery, the book includes themes such as murder, suicide, and drug-related issues. These elements are handled in a way that fits the genre and are not overly surprising.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is an easy and quick read that keeps you engaged throughout. I did notice a couple of small spelling errors, but nothing major. The story itself is compelling and constantly makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys cosy murder mysteries, especially fans of The Thursday Murder Club style stories. It has a very similar feel, with a hilarious tone and lovable characters.
I am excited to see what comes next from this author. Tracey Bloom, who usually writes romance, is using a pen name for this novel, which makes sense as she explores a new genre.
