Britt-Marie is a 63-year-old woman who likes things done a certain way. She is meticulous, set in her routines, and firmly believes that changing them would simply be wrong. After finally leaving her husband of 40 years, tired of enduring his repeated infidelity, Britt-Marie finds herself alone and needing to rebuild her life from scratch. 

In search of work, she visits the local job centre and unexpectedly lands a position as caretaker of a recreation centre in Borg, a struggling small Swedish town where businesses are slowly disappearing. In Borg, the post office, pizzeria, and medical centre all operate from the same building, and opportunities are few and far between. What Britt-Marie certainly doesn’t expect is to find herself coaching a children’s football team despite having never understood, supported, or even particularly liked the sport. 

Britt-Marie is a fascinating protagonist. Her countless quirks and unwavering commitment to doing things properly make her both frustrating and utterly endearing. Her blunt honesty regularly leaves you cringing and laughing in equal measure, wondering how she manages to say some of the things she does without causing complete chaos. 

At its heart, this novel explores themes of loneliness, self-discovery, and resilience. Britt-Marie approaches every task with determination and dedication, and through the children she gradually comes to care for, she begins to build a new sense of family and learn who she is beyond being someone’s wife. 

This is an incredibly heartwarming story. Even as someone with little interest in football, I never minded how central the sport was to the plot because Backman beautifully demonstrates how sport can unite people, create a sense of belonging, and give hope to communities that feel forgotten. 

If you’re a football fan, this book will be right up your street. Equally, if you enjoy quirky, funny older characters with absolutely no filter, you’ll find Britt-Marie both hilarious and unforgettable. The ending delivers exactly what you hope for from this kind of story—warm, satisfying, and full of heart.
